my non-negotiable truths for right now - in life & business
There have been some pretty real losses happening close to home for me in the last few weeks...
Tender, beautiful, real...and sacred reminders of the truth that we spend a lot of time trying to avoid - that this being here and human thing is temproary.
More temporary than we want to admit when we're entrenched in our day to day existence.
I've come to realize, though, that when you're a person who is paying attention - this being alive thing takes it to a whole new level...
Throw in building a business, raising a family, navigating the collapse of the world systems and structures as we know them, needing to pack the school lunches and plan birthday parties and get in that protein....and we're up to our eyeballs in existential truth.
I am with you in all of this.
But I need to talk to you about fear, itself.
I've, of course, felt waves of it growing in me over the last few months...In talking with people every day who are meeting these same waves - it has made me acutely aware of how close to the surface our fear lives and guides our days.
I've also come to understand that it's a direct response invitation asking us to turn and face it...
As a society that craves comfort at all costs, being intimate with fear is not something we love to make a practice of - yet, what other option is there?
Despite this persistent reality - here's what I am discovering about fear at 44-years-young...
The nature of fear, when you really stop to examine it - is that it can shape-shift and transmute the more willing we are to stop and actually be with it.
It's opening the closet as a kid to face the monster only to realize it was a pile of clothes in the corner.
It's the witness work that happens in coaching - the waving of the white flag and saying the real things out loud so they no longer live inside of us.
In the words of Richard Rudd, "All fear is finite."
When we put these things together - fear becomes a doorway to freedom.
And a life well-lived will require us to cross our fear thresholds over and over again.
A relationship that can stand the test of time will too.
I don't think we can have the life we truly desire without metabolizing and activating this understanding.
Because this way of living with our fear also gifts us things like courage and grace, tenacity and devotion, perseverance and grit - all necessary ingredients in creating anything great.
As I sit at the trailhead of the moment we are collectively entering - truths being revealed, the battle of light and dark out in the open - and the very real need for all of us to continue to survive and thrive through it all...
Here is what I see and know - especially as it relates to our businesses:
We need each other now more than ever - better together IS the business strategy.
Separation is a fragment of fear - creating opportunities for connection - intimacy/witness work, hands-on, real deal HELP is what will win in these months ahead.
Collaborative modeling - co-creative and connected is what will become the norm.
Guru-culture/pedestaling/idolization is broken and dissolving before our eyes (thank goodness)...it's painful to watch - but it is necessary and needed.
Sovereignty and radical personal responsibility are the only way forward - co-creating from here will help us unlock a new realm of consciousness and creativity.
The human spirit is powerful, enduring and ALIVE.
This is our moment to rise above the terror, personally and as a collective, and stand steadfast in the remembrance of all that we've overcome and survived ALREADY so we can use that as the fuel for this next chapter of our legacy.
In the words of Richard Rudd,
We have to keep going specifically to those places where fear appears to be strongest...
It is like standing on the edge of a cliff.
You don’t jump off the cliff.
You just stand there.
You just go to the edge and look at your fear.
Bringing gentleness and tenderness to our fear - a willingness to look and see what's there - to meet the parts of ourselves that are ready to release it like a balloon string to the sky...this is the gift of our fear.
Over to you:
What's gripping you in this moment?
Imagine yourself walking over to the edge of the proverbial cliff and looking at it. What happens in your body when you see it rather than enter it?
What does it reveal for you?
Where do you feel yourself being invited through this exercise?
