b-day beach walks + big moves
On Ben's birthday, we went for a long beach walk while our family members stayed back to make sand castles with the kids.
We held hands and walked in silence as the sun slowly burned the dense fog away.
This was one of those walks we could both feel something important coming through.
With birthdays just a week or so apart, we both come to our personal new years at the same time.
It's a special thing to get to compare notes and reflect on where we are and where we're going like this.
We passed a woman doing a dance routine in the shallow waves and I admired how free she seemed to be.
I looked back and couldn't see where we had come from and after a little while, I asked out loud,
"What do we want our life to be about from here?"
Ben is pretty used to me asking him spontaneous deep questions like this so he didn't hesitate...
"Us," he said.
I joined in...
"Yes, us...
And our babies...
And our people...
And what it felt like on the lawn at my Dad's 80th when everyone was there...
And this tiny, teeny chapter of our entire lives when our kids are little...
And me writing poetry and helping women do their work...
And you running your races and producing podcasts...
And us spending our time enjoying our beautiful lives, right here, right now."
A wave crashed at our shins...
"Yes, all of that," he said.

Ben and I walked for a long time turning these question over together.
We made some new plans, we moved some things up, we cleared out some old stuff and we surprised ourselves.
I haven't felt this excited and at peace in all of my life.
I can't even tell you how much I've had to let go of to get here.
And the best part is that it's fully integrating into everything, including my work.
I've been playing with a move I've wanted to make for some time now.
It feels wild and exciting and like the very thing I've been deeply craving...
